Retailers have all, at some point, participated in a case of the designer copycat epidemic. To highlight this situation, consumers and brands are taking to social media to create change and it’s working.
Since U.S. laws do not protect designers, brands are publicly calling out their copycat on social media as a form of shaming rather than suing. Notable incidents, centered on music and award shows, occurred when retailers shared images of celebrity clothing on Instagram thinking it to be their own design when it was a designer’s original piece. As a result, retailers have been ridiculed for their mistake on social and have yet to do it again.
Social media has given consumers the tools to hold retailers liable as excessive copying destroys brand creativity and benefits retailers while undercutting the designer.
