Instagram Tests Out New Shopping Feature

Instagram just launched a new feature enabling in-app checkout for its shoppable posts. By streamlining the process, Instagram is hoping to become the new digital mall. The in-app checkout feature is currently in beta and is rolling out across 20 retail brands like Nike, Zara, Burberry, and Michael Kors. The vendors will pay a cut of their sales to Instagram.

Users will tap on the “View the Product” button and see the “Checkout on Instagram” button. From there they will able to save their details (credit card, address and billing information) for expedited checkout and ease.

“Removing as much friction from the shopping experience as possible to make it a truly native shopping experience for users is a key part of the plan,” said Matt Navarra, a social media consultant. “This development will allow an end-to-end purchasing flow, which will likely increase sales for brands already attempting to drive sales on the platform.”

This is an exciting new feature and will be a game-changer once it becomes available to all brands. According to Instagram, they have exciting shopping features coming out in 2019, though they have yet to elaborate on those further.
