Emerging Platform // Byte
Byte, Vine’s second coming is now available to download on iOS and Android. This app, announced in 2017, will be similar to its originator allowing for short-form, 6-second uploads.
Unlike its competitors, it does not have any AR, effects or editing tools available in-app. While many are excited for the return of Vine, a lack of monetization for top creators available on the app, much like TikTok, could be the demise of the newcomer.
At its peak, Vine had 200 million monthly users, far less than Instagram and TikTok’s current numbers. These numbers eventually lead to it’s shut down in 2016.
While the app shut down, it did give us many of our favorite creators (David Dobrik, King Bach, and Amanda Cerny, just to name a few) along with our love for shorter-form content.
It will be interesting to see how Byte breaks into this world. We will be exploring it as we do with all new apps for its ever-growing potential and 6-second videos.
